Diplomatic Missions of Ukraine 

Diplomatic missions of Ukraine are the official representations of Ukraine in other countries and international organizations. They are responsible for promoting and protecting the interests of Ukraine and its citizens abroad, as well as facilitating cooperation and dialogue between Ukraine and its partners. Diplomatic missions of Ukraine include embassies, consulates, permanent missions, and diplomatic offices.

As of 2023, Ukraine has 83 embassies, 24 consulates-general, 3 consulates, 2 diplomatic offices, and 1 delegation to the European Union. Ukraine also has a public diplomacy office that coordinates the image, cultural and information projects of Ukraine abroad. What is a Permanent Representative?

A Permanent Representative is a diplomat who represents a country in an international body such as the United Nations, European Union, African Union or Organization of American States. A permanent representative has the rank of ambassador and is the head of a permanent mission, that is, a country’s diplomatic representation in a host country of an international organization.

What is a High Commissioner?

A High Commissioner is a type of diplomat who represents other countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. The Commonwealth of Nations is a union of 54 nations who share historical ties, values and interests, working together on diverse issues such as democracy, human rights, trade, development and security.

High Commissioners carry the same rank and duties as Ambassadors, but the term is used to reflect the special relationship and equality between the Commonwealth countries. The High Commissioner is the head of the High Commission, i.e. the diplomatic representative of the host country.

What is an Ambassador?

An Ambassador is a diplomat who usually represents another country in a capital city. An ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat and head of the embassy, or diplomatic representative of the host country.

What is a consul?

A consul is a type of diplomat who represents one country in another, usually in major cities other than the capital. A consul has a lower status and role than an ambassador and is the head of a consulate, a country’s diplomatic mission in a host country.

What is the European Union?

The European Union is a supranational political and economic body of 27 member states, mostly in Europe. The EU was established by the Maastricht Treaty, which entered into force on November 1, 1993. The treaty creates a single currency (the euro), a single foreign and security policy, common citizenship, and promotes cooperation on immigration, asylum and judicial matters, thereby promoting the political and economic integration of Europe.

What is ASEAN?

ASEAN is an organization of ten countries in Southeast Asia whose purpose is to promote economic, social and cultural cooperation and peace and security in the region. The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations is an international treaty establishing a framework for diplomatic relations between independent countries. Adopted by the United Nations in 1961 and entered into force in 1964. As of June 2021, it has 193 Parties.

This treaty covers various aspects of diplomatic transactions, privileges and immunities such as:

  • Establishment of diplomatic relations and missions by mutual agreement.
