What is Diplomatic Mission

A diplomatic mission is an official representation of one state in another. It is headed by an ambassador or other diplomatic representative. The mission’s main tasks are to represent the sending state to the receiving state, protect the interests of the sending state and its nationals in the receiving state, and promote friendly relations between the two states.

The diplomatic mission of Myanmar in Washington, D.C. is located at 2300 S Street NW, Washington, D.C., 20008. The mission’s current ambassador is U Aung Lynn.

The mission’s functions include:

  • Representing Myanmar to the United States government.
  • Protecting the interests of Myanmar nationals in the United States.
  • Promoting trade and investment between Myanmar and the United States.
  • Promoting cultural understanding between Myanmar and the United States.

What is Consulate?

A consulate is a diplomatic mission of a country located in a foreign city, but not in the capital city of that foreign country. Consulates are headed by a consul, who is responsible for providing consular services to citizens of the country that the consulate represents.

There are two consulates of Myanmar in the United States:

The functions of a consulate include:

  • Providing consular services to citizens of Myanmar who are visiting or residing in the United States.
  • Promoting trade and investment between Myanmar and the United States.
  • Promoting cultural understanding between Myanmar and the United States.
  • Providing information about Myanmar to the American people.

What is International law?

Myanmar is also bound by customary international law, which is unwritten law that is derived from the practice of states. Customary international law is just as binding as treaties, even if it is not written down.

The Myanmar government has a number of obligations under international law. These obligations include:

  • Respecting the sovereignty of other states.
  • Not using force against other states.
  • Fulfilling its international obligations.
  • Protecting human rights.
  • Cooperating with other states to resolve disputes peacefully.

Myanmar has not always complied with its obligations under international law. For example, the Myanmar government has been accused of human rights abuses, including the use of torture and arbitrary detention.

However, the Myanmar government has taken some steps to improve its compliance with international law. For example, it has ratified the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

What is a Diplomat?

A diplomat of Myanmar is a person who represents the government of Myanmar to another country. They are responsible for promoting Myanmar’s interests in the host country, protecting the rights of Myanmar nationals in the host country, and building relationships with the host country’s government and people.

Diplomats of Myanmar are appointed by the President of Myanmar and are typically career diplomats who have served in other diplomatic missions. They are given a rank, which is based on their experience and seniority. The highest-ranking diplomat is the Ambassador, who is the head of the diplomatic mission.

What is Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Myanmar is the government ministry responsible for the country’s foreign relations. It is headed by the Union Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is currently Than Swe. The MOFA has its headquarters in Yangon, and it also has embassies and consulates in 44 countries.

The MOFA’s main responsibilities include:

  • Representing Myanmar in international organizations and at international conferences
  • Conducting negotiations with foreign governments
