What is a Diplomatic Mission?

Latvia has diplomatic missions in 38 countries and 7 international organizations, such as the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, and the Council of Europe.  Latvia also hosts diplomatic missions from 34 countries and 5 international organizations in its capital city, Riga.  Latvia sends and receives ambassadors to and from these countries and organizations, except for those that are members of the Commonwealth of Nations, such as Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Latvia sends and receives high commissioners to and from these countries, which is a different type of diplomat that signifies the special relationship and historical ties between the Commonwealth countries.

What is a Consulate?

A consulate is a type of diplomatic mission that represents a country in a foreign city that is not the capital of the host country. A consulate has a lower rank and functions than an embassy, and is accredited to the local authorities of the host city. A consulate is responsible for protecting and assisting the nationals and interests of the sending country, as well as facilitating trade, tourism, culture, and education. A Latvia’s diplomat is a person who represents Latvia in its relations with other countries or international organizations. A Latvia’s diplomat can have different titles and ranks, such as ambassador, consul, attaché, or envoy. A Latvia’s diplomat can perform various functions, such as presenting credentials, negotiating agreements, protecting the interests of Latvia and its nationals, reporting and gathering information, and promoting friendly and cooperative relations.

Latvia’s diplomat is appointed by the President of Latvia, upon the recommendation of the Prime Minister and the approval of the Parliament. Latvia’s diplomat must have high qualifications, experience, and loyalty to serve the country and the people. Latvia’s diplomat must also abide by the laws of Latvia and the host country, as well as the rules of international law and diplomacy.

What is the Ministry of foreign affairs?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia is the government agency that is responsible for conducting the foreign policy and diplomatic relations of Latvia. It is headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is a member of the Cabinet and reports to the Prime Minister.   • Ensuring the country’s independence and territorial integrity. This is the overarching goal of Latvia’s foreign policy, and it is pursued through close cooperation with NATO and the European Union.
  • Strengthening security. This includes both military and non-military aspects, such as cyber security and energy security.
  • Promoting economic development. This is seen as essential for ensuring the long-term prosperity of Latvia and its people.
  • Protecting human rights and democracy. Latvia is a strong supporter of human rights and democracy, and it works to promote these values in its foreign policy.
  • Engaging in multilateralism. Latvia believes that multilateralism is the best way to address global challenges, and it is an active participant in a number of international organizations.
  • Building strong bilateral relations. Latvia maintains close relations with its neighbors and other countries around the world.

What is International relations?

Latvia’s international relations are the relations that Latvia has with other countries and international organizations. Latvia’s international relations are based on four main principles: democracy, integration, security, and development. Latvia is a member of the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, and the Council of Europe, and supports their efforts to promote peace, democracy, human rights, and cooperation. Latvia also seeks to establish and maintain friendly and cooperative relations with all countries, especially its neighbors and major partners. 

Latvia also participates in various regional and multilateral initiatives and projects, such as the Nordic-Baltic Eight, the Baltic Assembly, the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan, the Rail Baltica project, and the Baltic Sea Region Programme. Latvia also provides development assistance to other countries, especially in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Africa. Latvia’s international relations are implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.

What is a Permanent representative?

Latvia’s permanent representative to the United Nations is Andrejs Pildegovičs. He is the head of the Latvian Mission to the UN in New York. He represents Latvia in the UN General Assembly, the Security Council, and other UN bodies and committees. He also engages with other countries’ representatives and the UN Secretariat on various topics of global concern.

Latvia’s permanent representative to the European Union is Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes. She is the head of the Latvian Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. She represents Latvia in the Council of the EU, which is the main decision-making body of the EU. She also coordinates with other EU institutions, such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European Court of Justice, on matters related to Latvia’s interests and obligations as an EU member state.

Latvia’s permanent representative to the OECD is Indulis Ābelis. He is the head of the Latvian Delegation to the OECD in Paris. He represents Latvia in the OECD Council, which is the governing body of the OECD. He also participates in various OECD committees and working groups that deal with economic and social policies, such as taxation, education, health, and innovation.

What is the High Commissioner?

A High Commissioner is a type of diplomat who represents a country in an international organization or another country that is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. A High Commissioner has the same rank and functions as an Ambassador, but the term is used to emphasize the special relationship between Commonwealth countries. Latvia is not a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, so it does not have High Commissioners. Latvia has Ambassadors who represent it in other countries and international organizations.

Latvia is one of the member states of the UN. It joined the UN on 17 September 1991, after gaining independence from the Soviet Union. Since then, Latvia has been a staunch advocate of international law, human rights, democracy and effective multilateralism. Latvia has participated in various UN activities and bodies, such as the Economic and Social Council, the Commission on Science and Technology for Development, the Commission on the Status of Women, and the UN Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women. Latvia is also a candidate for a seat on the Security Council for 2025.

What is the European Union?

The European Union (EU) is a group of 27 countries in Europe that cooperate with each other on various issues, such as trade, environment, security, and human rights. The EU has its own flag, anthem, currency (the euro), and laws that apply to all its members. The EU was founded in 1993 by the Maastricht Treaty, but it has its roots in earlier agreements that aimed to promote peace and cooperation in Europe after World War II.

What is ASEAN?

ASEAN is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a regional organization that consists of 10 member states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. ASEAN was founded in 1967 to promote economic growth, social progress, cultural development, and regional stability among its members. ASEAN also aims to foster cooperation and dialogue with other countries and organizations on various issues, such as trade, security, environment, and human rights. ASEAN has a secretariat based in Jakarta, Indonesia, and holds regular summits and meetings at various levels.

What is NATO?

NATO is an intergovernmental military alliance between 31 member states from Europe and North America. It was established in 1949 to create a counterweight to Soviet armies stationed in central and eastern Europe after World War II. NATO’s purpose is to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means. NATO operates on the principle of collective defence, which means that an attack against one or several of its members is considered an attack against all members, and other members shall assist the attacked member, with armed forces if necessary.

Latvia is one of the member states of NATO. It joined the alliance in 2004, along with Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Latvia is a staunch advocate of international law, human rights, democracy and effective multilateralism. Latvia contributes actively to regional exercises, ensuring its forces are well trained and prepared. Latvia also hosts a NATO-led multinational battlegroup at Camp Ādaži, which is part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence in the Baltic states and Poland. The battlegroup consists of around 1,000 troops from Albania, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. 

What is a Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations?

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations is an international treaty that defines a framework for diplomatic relations between independent countries. It was adopted in 1961 by the United Nations and entered into force in 1964. It covers various aspects of diplomatic intercourse, privileges and immunities, such as the establishment of diplomatic missions, the functions and duties of diplomatic agents, the inviolability of diplomatic premises and communications, and the protection of diplomats from coercion or harassment by the host country.

Latvia is one of the parties to the Vienna Convention. It joined the treaty on 17 September 1991, after gaining independence from the Soviet Union. Latvia has diplomatic relations with many countries and international organizations, and has appointed ambassadors and other diplomatic staff to represent its interests and policies. Latvia also hosts diplomatic missions from other countries on its territory, and respects their rights and immunities under the Vienna Convention. Latvia is a staunch advocate of international law, human rights, democracy and effective multilateralism

What is a Sovereign state?
