Documents and Items needed for your OCI application
Obtaining an Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card requires submitting specific documents to demonstrate your eligibility and fulfill application requirements. To ensure a smooth and efficient process, it’s crucial to gather the correct documentation well in advance.3
Essential Documents
- Current Valid Passport: Ensure it has at least six months’ validity from the application date.
- Passport-size Color Photographs: Two recent photos meeting size and background specifications as outlined on the official OCI website.
- Completed Online Application Form: Fill out the OCI application online and print a copy.
- Declaration Form: Download and complete the declaration form provided on the official website.
Proof of current citizenship
- Provide a copy of the current valid passport with a minimum validity of six months at the time of application submission.
- Include a copy of the certificate of registration of citizenship/naturalization (as applicable) for the current nationality of the applicant.
- For those who surrendered their Indian passport in or after 2010, submit the canceled/surrendered Indian passport with the Surrender Certificate.
Evidence of the address of the place of application
- Submit a copy of the electricity bill/telephone bill in your name, your parents’, grandparents’, or spouse’s name.
- If the bill is in another relative’s name, include an undertaking from the relative stating that the foreigner is residing with them.
- Provide a lease license for tenants.
If the application is submitted in India
- Include a copy of any long-duration visa (excluding Tourist Visa, Missionary Visa, and Mountaineering Visa) with at least three months of validity at the time of application. Additionally, provide the Residential Permit/Registration Certificate issued by the jurisdictional FRRO/FRO.
Evidence of self or family’s Indian origin
- Include a copy of the Indian Passport, Domicile Certificate, Nativity Certificate, or PIO/OCI card of parents/spouse, along with documents substantiating Indian heritage.
- Submit any other proof supporting the request, such as a certificate of residence or place of birth from the First Class Magistrate/District Magistrate.
Evidence of relationship for OCI registration based on Indian origin
- Present a birth certificate issued by a competent authority mentioning both parents’ names. If issued by a foreign authority, apostille or endorsement by the concerned Indian Mission abroad/foreign Mission in India is required.
- In the case of divorced parents, include the court order of dissolution of marriage specifying the legal custody of the child. If in a foreign language, provide an English or Hindi translation by an authorized translator.
- Include a birth certificate supported by education documents and documents of inherited landed property.
For a minor child with Indian citizen parents
- Include the child’s birth certificate.
- Submit the marriage certificate of the parent or provide reasons if unavailable.
- Include a copy of the Indian passport of the parents or domicile/nativity certificate or any other proof substantiating their Indian citizenship.
For spouses of Indian citizens or OCI cardholders
- Provide a registered marriage certificate.
- In the case of an Indian citizen spouse, submit a copy of their Indian passport or domicile/nativity certificate.
- For an OCI cardholder spouse, include a copy of their valid passport and OCI card, along with documents used for the OCI card application.
- Include a declaration from the Indian/OCI cardholder spouse regarding the surrender of the OCI card in case of divorce/separation/death of the foreign spouse.
Note: Specific guidelines for submitting marriage certificates apply based on whether the marriage was solemnized in India or a foreign country, requiring certification or apostillation as applicable. An authorized translator should provide translations of documents in foreign languages.
