Singapore citizens can apply for an OCI or Overseas Citizen of India, meaning they can apply for a special card that grants them some of the rights and privileges of Indian citizens, such as visa-free entry, multiple entry, and lifelong validity.

There are several benefits to being an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, including:

Visa and Stay

  • Multiple entry, lifelong visa: You can visit India anytime, for any purpose, and stay for as long as you want without obtaining a separate visa.
  • Exemption from registration: Unlike foreign nationals, you don’t need to register with local police authorities for any length of stay in India.

Economic and Financial

  • Parity with NRIs: You enjoy similar rights as Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in economic, financial, and educational fields. This includes:
    • Acquiring, holding, transferring, and disposing of immovable property (except agricultural/plantation properties).
    • Admitting children to educational institutions under the general NRI quota (including medical and engineering colleges, IITs, IIMs, etc.).
    • Availing various housing schemes offered by government agencies and LIC of India.

Other Benefits

  • Identity proof: You can use your OCI card as identification proof for various purposes in India, like opening a bank account or applying for a PAN card.
  • Path to citizenship: After holding the OCI card for five years and residing in India for at least 1 year, you can apply for Indian citizenship under specific conditions.

Important points to remember

  • You cannot vote in Indian elections as an OCI cardholder.
  • You cannot hold certain government jobs or contest elections.
  • For certain activities like research, missionary work, or employment in foreign diplomatic missions, you may need special permission from the Indian government.
