Yes, Malaysian citizens are eligible to apply for an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. The OCI scheme is primarily intended for foreign nationals of Indian origin. To be eligible, individuals typically need to fulfill certain criteria, such as being of Indian origin or having Indian ancestry.

The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card serves as a bridge, connecting individuals of Indian origin to their ancestral roots. For Malaysian citizens with Indian heritage, the OCI card presents an invaluable opportunity to foster a deeper connection with the land of their forebears. As Malaysia and India share a rich history and a tapestry of cultural ties, navigating the OCI application process is a significant step toward strengthening these bonds.1

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I travel to India while my OCI application is being processed?

Traveling to India while your OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) application is still being processed is impossible. This is because OCI is not a visa but a lifelong privilege that allows eligible foreign nationals to travel to India visa-free. Therefore, you will need to wait until your OCI application is approved and you receive your OCI card before entering India without a visa. Alternatively, if you urgently need to visit India, you can apply for a regular visa.

Can I travel to India without an OCI card?

Yes, you can travel to India without an OCI card. However, you will need to apply for a regular visa based on your specific travel purposes, such as a tourism visabusiness visa, or work visa, also offered by Visas for Future.

Can I Apply For An Indian Visa And OCI At The Same Time?

The general practice is that individuals can apply for an Indian visa and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card simultaneously. Both the visa and OCI processes are distinct, but they can be pursued concurrently.

Is it better to get an OCI or an Indian visa?

The choice between an Indian visa and an OCI card depends on your circumstances and needs. If you are planning frequent or extended visits to India, the OCI card may be a better option despite the higher initial cost. However, if you are only planning a short visit or need more flexibility, an Indian visa may be sufficient.
